Welcome to the Course
Welcome to Yacht Interior Design 1, the first course in a three-course series dedicated to interior yacht design.
In this course, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of designing yacht interiors, including interior areas, spacing and layout, materials, furniture, design representation, and project presentation. You will also explore the role of the yacht interior designer, the main stages of the interior design process, and the yacht-specific considerations that influence how interior spaces are planned and developed.
This series has been developed by Lisandro Torres and Yania Demaria, bringing together Lisandro’s many years of industry expertise in yacht interior design with Yania’s experience in naval architecture, 3D modeling, and interior design. Yania is also a Navalapp instructor for the Yacht 3D Modeling with Rhino courses. In Yacht Interior Design 1, Lisandro Torres will lead the course and guide you through the essential concepts, methods, and practical considerations that form the basis of yacht interior design.
Course Overview
Yacht Interior Design 1 provides a general understanding of the unique challenges and requirements involved in yacht interior design, including space limitations, movement, environmental factors, layout, materials, colors, textures, and yacht interior areas.
Students will explore the role of the interior yacht designer, the main types of yachts, yacht dimensions, general arrangements, and the differences between yachts, superyachts, sailing yachts, and motor yachts. The course also covers the interior design process from the conceptual phase through development, verification, production, delivery, and after-sales or refit considerations.
The course introduces conventional and non-standard yacht interior spaces, furniture types, fixed and loose components, and the materials and finishes used aboard yachts. Students will also learn basic representation methods, including sketching, 2D drawings, General Arrangement drawings, cabin drawings, furniture drawings, 3D basics, common software, and the use of AI for yacht interior design.
In the final part of the course, students will learn how to present an interior yacht design project using a design brief, mood board, floor plan, materials and finishes selection, and visualization methods. The course concludes with a final project in which students design or redesign a yacht interior area.
What You Will Learn
By the end of this course, students will have a general understanding of the interior yacht design process, the role of the yacht interior designer, the main types of yachts and interior areas, and the yacht-specific considerations that influence how interior spaces are planned, represented, and presented. Students will also be introduced to materials, furniture, finishes, design principles, basic 2D and 3D representation methods, and project presentation techniques.
More concretely, students will learn to:
- Understand the role of an interior yacht designer.
- Understand the interior design process, from initial concept through development to final production.
- Identify different types of yachts and understand general yacht dimensions.
- Understand yacht interior areas, including spacing and layout considerations.
- Understand what a General Arrangement drawing is and why it is important.
- Recognize the main differences between yacht and superyacht layouts.
- Recognize the main differences between sailing yacht and motor yacht interiors.
- Understand the unique challenges of designing for yachts, including space limitations, movement, and environmental factors.
- Learn fundamental design principles, including balance, harmony, and functionality.
- Identify key yacht interior components, including cabins, galleys, lounges, furniture, and onboard areas.
- Distinguish between conventional spaces and non-standard areas.
- Understand standard, custom, and semi-custom furniture.
- Distinguish between fixed and loose interior components.
- Gain an introduction to materials, colors, textures, and finishes used in yacht interiors.
- Understand how systems, insulation, structure, compartments, mounting frames, glazing, and finishes affect yacht interiors.
- Develop basic skills for creating layouts, sketches, floor plans, General Arrangement drawings, cabin drawings, and furniture drawings.
- Understand common 2D and 3D representation methods and software.
- Understand common uses of AI in yacht interior design.
- Learn how to prepare an interior yacht design project presentation.
- Understand the purpose of a design brief, mood board, floor plan, materials and finishes selection, and visualizations.
- Understand employment options, professional roles, opportunities, rates, salaries, and portfolio basics for yacht interior designers.
- Apply the course content by designing or redesigning a yacht interior area as a final project.
