Exterior & Interior Design 1

Discover the principles and practice of yacht exterior and interior design. This course introduces the historical context and design philosophies behind yacht design, then guides you from the first brief, concept ideas and typology studies through to materials, construction considerations, layouts, ergonomics, CAD development, specifications, visualisation and final presentation. You will learn how exterior form and interior space influence one another, how user needs and practical constraints shape design decisions, and how ideas are communicated, reviewed and refined in a professional yacht design project.

Welcome to the Course

Welcome to this course on Exterior & Interior Design!

Yacht design is both a historic and contemporary discipline. While yachts have been designed and built for centuries, the modern yacht design process brings together multiple areas of expertise, including product and industrial design, interior design, materials, construction methods, regulations, visual communication, and project coordination.

Throughout this course, you will be introduced to the way yacht designers think, develop, communicate, and refine their ideas. You will examine how exterior form and interior space influence one another, how user needs shape design decisions, and how practical constraints such as materials, ergonomics, construction, specifications, and regulatory requirements affect the final outcome.

The course is designed to guide you through the complete design process, from the first ideas and client brief through to drawings, CAD development, specification documents, visualisations, feedback stages, and final presentation.

Course Overview

This course provides a practical introduction to the process of designing yachts, with a particular focus on the connection between exterior yacht design and interior yacht design.

You will begin by looking at the context of yacht design, including terminology, learning outcomes, historical development, design philosophies, and the role of the design brief. From there, the course moves into the main stages of a yacht design project, including typology, material choices, construction considerations, layout development, general arrangement drawings, exterior form development, interior planning, ergonomics, and visual communication.

As the course progresses, you will learn how design ideas are developed from sketches into two-dimensional and three-dimensional CAD work, and how these outputs are supported by specification schedules, material selections, mood boards, sample boards, technical drawings, details, renders, and final presentation documents.

The course also introduces the collaborative and iterative nature of yacht design. At several stages, students will be encouraged to present their work, receive feedback, and refine their design decisions, reflecting the kind of review process that takes place in professional design projects with clients, shipyards, suppliers, and other stakeholders.

By the end of the course, students will have a clearer understanding of how a yacht design project moves from early concept to final design communication, and how the different design, technical, practical, and regulatory considerations interact throughout the process.

What You Will Learn

In this course, you will learn how yacht design projects are developed from the first brief and concept ideas through to final drawings, specifications, visualisations, and presentation documents.

You will explore the historical development of yacht design, key design philosophies, and the relationship between exterior design, interior design, and naval architecture. You will also study different boat and yacht typologies, material choices, construction implications, sustainability considerations, ergonomics, regulations, and the practical constraints that shape a yacht design project.

The course will guide you through the production of general arrangement drawings, exterior and interior layouts, elevations, centreline sections, technical details, CAD models, specification schedules, mood boards, sample boards, renders, and final presentation materials. You will also learn how feedback, critique, client communication, shipyard coordination, and supplier input contribute to the iterative development of a professional yacht design project.
