Challenges in sailboat design

Using wind power and sails as the primary means of propulsion brings additional dimensions to the design of a sailboat compared to ship or powerboat design. The designer’s challenge is to balance the different parameters to achieve the best overall performance and characteristics, rather than optimize the boat to one operating situation.

Scantling determination and ISO 12215

Scantling is the process of determining the dimensions of the different elements of a structure (e.g., panels and reinforcements in the case of a hull) so that they can be manufactured. ISO 12215 is a scantling standard that applies to recreational and commercial craft and workboats up to 24 meters in length. Compliance with ISO 12215 is mandatory for obtaining the CE marking and, therefore, for selling boats in the European Union.

What the hydrodynamic resistance is and why it matters

The motion of a sailing yacht through water requires energy to overcome resistance. It is essential to know the mechanisms behind the generation of this force that works against the movement so that we can make the resistance of a new design match the project's overall performance goals.

Sail design – An overview

Having a good set of sails is crucial for enhancing a sailboat’s performance on the water. But what do we know about all the science behind sail design? Sail design is a fascinating and complex subject. Surprisingly, there is not a lot of available material to properly understand all the challenges associated with it, all the decisions that a sail designer needs to take in order to deliver the best possible sail for the boat.
