The Joop Slooff Interview đźš©

We had the pleasure of an in-depth, hour-long conversation with Joop Slooff—one of our longtime friends—and this recording captures that discussion.
Joop Slooff is a distinguished aeronautical engineer and fluid dynamicist. After earning his aeronautical engineering degree from Delft University of Technology in 1964 and completing the VKI Diploma Course, he joined the National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) in 1965, focusing on airfoil and wing design and computational aerodynamics. He later became head of the Theoretical Aerodynamics Department (1976) and chief of the Fluid Dynamics Division (1986), serving until his 2001 retirement.
Slooff contributed to the 1983 America’s Cup by proposing the upside-down winged keel concept for Australia II and leading the supporting CFD work. He also participated in keel research at Delft University and was a part-time professor of applied computational aerodynamics from 1987 to 2001.
He has served on numerous national and international advisory bodies, delivered the 36th Lanchester Lecture, received the 1997 Von Kármán Medal, and is a Fellow of the AIAA. After retiring, he advised the ABN AMRO Volvo Ocean Race campaign and lectured on aero- and hydrodynamics of sailing. A lifelong sailor, he has cruised since 1977 and owns a 33-ft sloop with a winged keel.
We hope you will enjoy the conversation as much as we did!
