Hello, I’m Andrew Trujillo. I’m a yacht designer, a lecturer, and a transport designer too, and I have been in the industry for more than 35 years.

Yacht design is a complex field; it involves understanding some technical aspects. It also requires you to have an understanding of ergonomics and materials, finishes, and specifications; how to produce technical drawings; how to interpret technical drawings; and how to produce documents that communicate your ideas visually and help sell your designs.

This course is intended for complete beginners, for people who have had no experience and no background in yacht design at all. Obviously, if you have had some, you’re welcome to join us as well. The intention is to cover everything from the very, very basics all the way up to the beginning stages of developing forms, both exterior and interior, to get a taste of what is involved in our industry.

So you’ll be learning a little bit about the history of yacht design, about proportions and shapes, and about the different typologies of boats. We’ll cover interior materials and finishes, and we’ll cover the principles of design. We’ll look at atmosphere for interiors, ambient lighting, materials, how you select fabrics, fixtures, and fittings.

You will also learn about how you relate to other designers. You’ll understand a brief. You’ll then try to understand how to plan a boat’s layout and how to present your ideas, whether through sketches or other forms of illustration. We’ll help you through the transition from initial ideas to digital formats. We’ll also show you how to produce general arrangement plans, sections, profiles, and other typical drawings used in the industry.

In addition to working in 2D, we will eventually move into designing in 3D, and we’ll cover some basics you may need to consider when producing models.

I hope you join us.
