Well, congratulations. If you’re watching this video, it means that you have successfully completed Level 1 of this yacht interior design course.
What can I say? We have covered eight modules filled with information, from the very basics of yacht interior design to developing a better understanding of the spaces and different types of furniture found on board. We talked about materials—not only structural materials, but mainly interior design materials—and explored how to select materials, textures, and colours, how to prepare mood boards, and how to create a complete yacht interior design presentation at a professional level.
We also discussed the different ways in which you can represent your work, from traditional hand sketching and digital sketching to drafting and 3D modelling with different software. This also included visualisation and the use of AI—artificial intelligence—and whether or not it is a necessary or useful tool for an interior design project.
We explored how to coordinate and manage an entire interior design project, from the initial conceptual stage through development and final production. We also looked at all the information and documentation that yacht designers should prepare for manufacturing purposes, right through to the final delivery of the yacht.
Another topic I particularly wanted to cover was the position of the interior designer within the market—information that is not always easy to find. With the support of Marine Resources, we were able to discuss the different types of roles available within the interior design department of a design studio, design office, or shipyard, as well as typical rates, salaries, and employment opportunities within the market.
We also received support from Boat International Media when discussing the Global Order Book. We looked at how the information contained in this very interesting analysis and data resource can be connected to the potential opportunities available to yacht designers within the maritime and yachting industries.
Remember, this is only Level 1. If you are still working on the final project and have any questions or doubts, give us a shout. I will do my best to support you, not only with the final project but also with any other part of the course.
The final project brings together the different modules and areas we have discussed: spaces and furniture, materials on board, construction materials, interior design materials, the management of the entire project process, and the different ways of presenting your project and preparing the final interior design presentation.
For Levels 2 and 3, Yania Demaria will be joining me. Together, we will go into greater depth on all the content introduced during this first level, particularly drafting techniques, 3D modelling, and visualisation, as well as lighting design, ergonomics, compliance, and many, many other interesting topics. Together, these three levels will provide a strong and comprehensive foundation in yacht interior design.
