Structural Design + Scantling with ISO

This bundle combines two complementary courses to provide a complete learning path on the ISO 12215 standard for small craft up to 24 meters. The first course introduces the fundamentals of structural design and scantling, with a focus on composites and monohull sailboats, supported by worked examples and calculation templates. The second course expands to metallic and wooden materials, motorboats, and multihulls, covering more advanced applications of the standard. Both courses also address the underlying science of strength of materials and the structural design process. Practical examples illustrate how to determine scantlings for different structural elements, including keels, rudders, and rigging. By completing the bundle, students gain the knowledge and tools to apply ISO 12215 to a broad range of vessels with confidence.

What is a Bundle?

A bundle is a collection of courses we have wrapped up for you based on criteria such as complementarity, reinforcement, and/or enlargement of the subjects covered in each one.

Bundles enable the development of different learning paths by bringing together courses relevant to a specific area of knowledge. With bundles, we can guide you more effectively on your journey.

What is included in this bundle?

This bundle gives you access to the following courses:

Structural Design & Scantling with ISO 12215 introduces the principles of structural design and the process of scantling determination, essential for ensuring strength, stability, and safety in vessel design. The course presents the ISO 12215 standard for small craft up to 24 meters and explains how it is used to compute design pressures and scantlings. Students will learn the fundamentals of strength of materials and the structure definition process, supported by practical examples on a 17-meter GPR sailboat. By the end, participants will be able to design boat structures and apply ISO 12215 to evaluate scantlings for panels, stiffeners, rudders, keels, and rigging.

Going Further with Structural Design & Scantling with ISO 12215 is a continuation of the first course, expanding its scope to metallic and wooden materials, motorboats, and multihulls. It builds on the fundamentals of structural design and scantling determination while providing a deeper look into beam and shell theories, metallic properties, and wood characteristics. Students will apply ISO 12215 to case studies, including metallic motorboats, multihulls, and wooden panels. By completing the course, participants will strengthen their understanding of the standard and broaden their ability to design and evaluate different types of craft.

Organization

The courses are video-based and on demand, so you can learn at your own pace, anytime and anywhere. Each course includes videos, quizzes, and downloadable materials, along with access to a private virtual classroom where you can interact with instructors and fellow students. Upon completing all lessons, passing the quizzes, and having your final assignment approved, you will receive a Course Certificate.

Welcome aboard — and enjoy your learning journey!

RINA Endorsement

The Royal Institution of Naval Architects Endorsement

After a thorough evaluation, the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) has determined that Navalapp’s course Structural Design & Scantling with ISO 12215 meets its standards for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). As a result, RINA has formally recognized the course and issued a Certificate of Endorsement.

As part of the evaluation process, RINA reviewed various aspects of the course, including its learning objectives, content, and structure; the accuracy and currency of the materials; student feedback; the quality of supporting resources; the instructor’s qualifications; the assessment methods used; and the overall organizational standards maintained by Navalapp.

Going Further with Structural Design & Scantling with ISO 12215 is currently under assessment by RINA.
