When a vessel is floating upright, or almost upright, in still water, we can assume the metacenter, M, is situated at the symmetry plane. The range of angles within which we can assume M is on the symmetry plane depends heavily on the hull shape. For larger angles, point M will no longer be located at the symmetry plane, and the stability equations for small angles of heeling will not be valid anymore.
